International Joint Commission Sets Meeting Dates
The International Joint Commission (IJC), a bi-national commission established under the Boundary Waters Treaty of 1909 between the United States of America and Canada has announced a number of meetings that may be of interest to those who care about the Great Lakes, the St. Lawrence River and other U.S. Canada boundary waters.
Later this evening, the IJC will sponsor an information session concerning the Lake Ontario-St. Lawrence River Order of Approval being proposed by the commission regarding the future of water levels and water flow regulations. The meeting, the last of ten information sessions planned by the IJC will be held from 7-9 pm at the Qualtiy Inn on West Orvis St. near the St. Lawrence Seaway’s operations center in Massena, New York. Public hearings are scheduled after that which will run from June 9th to June 26th at various locations in the region. A full schedule of public hearings can be found on the IJC website at http://www.ijc.org/en/activities/losl/sessions_hearings_place.php.
The IJC also has announced that its next Biennial Meeting will take place on October 6-7, 2009. The meeting will be held at the St. Clair Centre for the Arts in Windsor, Ontario.
The IJC holds a Biennial Meeting every other year to hear from scientists and the public about issues relating to the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement, and to assist the Commission with preparing its Biennial Report on the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement. These reports assess the governments’ progress in meeting the goals of the Agreement to restore the physical, biological and chemical integrity of the Great Lakes waters. The upcoming meeting in Windsor will assist the IJC in preparing its 15th Biennial Report.
